WHY CHOOSE Equine Facilitated Learning or Therapy?

Learning with horses is powerful because it engages all of our senses.  Learning that occurs in an equine facilitated situation is so effective because it involves the whole being – our physical self, emotional self, psychological self and spiritual self.  Research has shown that, when learning something new, we retain about 20% of what we hear and about 50% of what we observe, but when physical activity is incorporated into visual and auditory learning processes, we retain 80% or more.  (By traditional measures of learning that is the difference between a failing grade and getting an “A”!)

“I hear, and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.”

With this and other therapeutic principles in mind, we gently but effectively guide you through a process which internalizes the learning, enhances your understanding and, most importantly, integrates the experience into relevant aspects of your life.  And, in many cases the results are nothing short of life changing.

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM EQUINE FACILITATED LEARNING OR THERAPY?

CHILDREN, TEENS, ADULTS, FAMILIES. PEOPLE WITH VISUAL OR AUDITORY IMPAIRMENTS AND/OR LEARNING DIFFERENCES.  Unfortunately, we are not able to accommodate people who use wheelchairs or who have severe mobility impairments as our grounds do not have flat surfaces.

Anyone who is open to the experience will be touched by the deep impact a connection with a horse creates.  Learning through an equine experience is effective for all ages and people of all cultures.  The learning can be very practical (learning life skill sets like communication or leadership); it can be very emotional (getting in touch with a source of grief); it can be psychological (awakening to underlying causes of behaviour); it can be spiritual (opening space for a sense of oneness with creation).

Our therapist will help you or your child take what is learned in the field with the horses and apply it to everyday life.   Through this work with horses we have strengthened the life skill sets and created positive change for children and adults with

  • Autism spectrum disorder
  • ADD/ADHD
  • Grief and loss
  • Shyness and lack of confidence
  • Self-harming behaviours
  • Eating disorders
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Anger and emotional self-regulation
  • Trauma of abuse and PTSD
  • Misuse of drugs and alcohol
  • Strengthening recovery from addiction
